Comanche Community,
As most of you have probably already heard there was a gun-related incident at the middle school Friday after school at approximately 4:30.
An individual shot through the glass of the front door and entered the school. There was only one employee in the building at the time. The employee heard the commotion and went to the front hallway where he encountered the individual. The employee then went to the cafeteria kitchen and called the police. The police responded and apprehended the individual in the hallway. The staff member handled the situation in the safest way possible. We practice drills so that in the heat of the moment we will recall what to do.
We live in a small rural community and hear of these occurrences in other places and think these things couldn’t happen here. Our community is not immune.
This is why the implementation of our Advocacy program is so important. Building relationships and knowing what is going on with our students is a step in the right direction. Advocacy may not prevent these things from happening, but it is a start.
This year we also have had the opportunity through a grant to have a counselor who can help students. This is so important. We will also have a parent outreach liaison on staff beginning next week through a grant. This individual will help with tutoring and contacting parents of students who need assistance. She will also assist with connecting them with outside services if needed.
The district will be reevaluating safety plans and looking for ways to continue to improve the safety of our school buildings.
The safety of students and staff is our top priority. Please let the building principal know if you have any questions. Parents, if you did not receive an email, contact your building principal as your email may need to be updated in the student information system.
Sincerely,
Julie Bills , CPS Superintendent
